Want to Start Losing Weight With Hypothyroidism? Learn More About the Disease Right Now

Hypothyroidism is a glandular condition in which the thyroid gland in the body is inflamed and it causes the death of cells in the thyroid. These cells help the gland create and secrete hormones that are needed in helping the body burn fat. There are a lot of different symptoms that come with hypothyroidism, but there are also a lot of treatments that are available for people who have the disorder.

In this article that you are reading you are going to learn the symptoms that come with this glandular disorder so that you will be more knowledgeable of what hypothyroidism is really about. You are also going to learn the number one treatment that helps with the most common symptom that comes with hypothyroidism.

Hopefully you become educated enough about the disorder through this article so that you can help others who are suffering from the disorder as well.

Like I already told you before, there are a lot of different treatments and symptoms that come with hypothyroidism.

Some of the most common symptoms that people who have the disorder suffer from are fatigue, weakness, constipation, depression, hair loss, dry skin, muscle cramps, bad menstrual cycles, irritability, irregular weight gain as well as problems losing that gained weight.

A lot of people who have the disorder suffer from all of these symptoms whereas some will only have a few of them but either way it still impacts their life greatly. Each symptom is just as much afflicting as the next one so it doesn’t really matter who has which one, but the symptom that really just beats up the body is the weight gain because its as if nothing we do can get the weight off.

Its not our fault that its hard to lose weight when we have hypothyroidism.

Weight gain is the biggest symptom that people are always upset about and they should be because they work hard to try and lose the weight. The main reason why it is so hard to lose weight when you have hypothyroidism is because of the fact that the metabolism slows down because of this disorder.

Obviously if you have a slow metabolism then you aren’t going to be burning a lot of calories if any at all, and even when you exercise you won’t burn a lot of calories if you have hypothyroidism. The only way to actually deal with this disorder and the weight gain that arises from it is to start using a diet plan that is going to speed up the metabolism so that you burn more calories than you consume.

All you need to do is use a diet plan and consult a personal trainer on how you should go about losing the weight. Be dedicated and diligent to follow your workout and diet plan so that you can lose the weight.

A recent FDA alert, along with new labeling, warns health professionals about the possibility of QT prolongation and Torsades de Pointes (TdP) in patients treated with the antipsychotic drug Haldol (haloperidol). The risk appears to be higher when the drug is administered intravenously or in higher doses than recommended. Injectable haloperidol is approved only for intramuscular administration, but it’s sometimes used intravenously to treat severe agitation. FDA is advising particular caution if the drug is used in patients who have other QT-prolonging conditions, including electrolyte imbalance. Caution should also be used in patients taking drugs known to prolong the QT interval, and in those who have underlying cardiac abnormalities, hypothyroidism or familial long QT syndrome. FDA also recommends ECG monitoring if haloperidol is given intravenously.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism – The Under-Active Thyroid Disease

The symptoms of Hypothyroidism are extensive and can be very unpleasant to live with. The main issue with the disease is that it is progressive, the symptoms change and increase in severity over a long period of time. Persons suffering with the illness not only suffer physical problems, but these also lead to mental issues such as Depression.

The disease is caused by the thyroid gland not being able to produce enough of the needed thyroid hormone. Essentially this slows down the body’s metabolism which leads to major symptoms. The most common, noticeable symptom is weight gain; though the list is extensive as the early stages are almost unnoticeable. To name a few of the most common:

feeling tired and sleeping a lot
feeling the cold easily
dry and/or pale skin
coarse, thinning hair and brittle nails

These are just a few of the symptoms caused by the disease. You may notice swelling of your thyroid gland. If you are suffering from any of the above you may need to find out more information to see if you have any of the other major symptoms, and I would suggest visiting your GP.

The problem with Hypothyroidism is that it involves so many different symptoms that are generally an illness in themselves. You probably do not suffer from the majority of the symptoms of the disease and would benefit from dealing with each individual one separately. For example “Fatigue” There are treatments and methods available to help with this element alone!

If you think you may have symptoms of hypothyroidism I would suggest looking into things in more detail. I have started a blog specifically for this disease to try help those in your situation find the correct course of action. A more extensive list of hypothyroidism symptoms is available at: http://www.talkhypothyroidism.info/

I now try to help others with the same issues by writing articles with tips and tricks to help lose weight in different ways. I found out that it doesn’t actually have to be through painful exercise, or heavy dieting, in fact those ways can be very unhealthy. I understand what people with weight problems go through and I care so much about how they feel. I don’t want anyone to go through the same as I did for all those years. Dog HypoThyroidism Disease
| August 12, 2010 | 3:29 pm | Thyroid Booster | No comments

Dog HypoThyroidism Disease

Hypothyroidism or Sluggish Thyroid Gland is a disorder of dog’s thyroid gland, the most common hormone or endocrine gland deficiency in dogs. This gland has a number of functions and serve as master of all endocrine glands, thyroid is most well known for regulating your dog’s metabolic rate. The thyroid gland has a number of different functions, but it is most well known for its role in regulating metabolism by producing thyroid hormones. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is under active, and unable to secrete enough thyroid hormone. This, in turn, decreases your dog’s metabolism. Hypothyroidism causes a wide variety of symptoms, but is often suspected in dogs that have trouble with weight gain or obesity and suffer from hair loss and skin problems.

Animals and dogs that get hypothyroidism, usually start showing signs when they are 4 – 6 years old. Male and female dogs are equally affected but I have noticed that I see it more in neutered pets. This could be because these days, more people own neutered dogs than un-neutered dogs. Hypothyroidism may also be a result of atrophy of the thyroid tissue and resultant infiltration of the tissue by fat, or by a cancer. Hypothyroidism can also be associated with the presence of other diseases and the use of certain medications. Rare cases of congenital hypothyroidism have been diagnosed, as well.  Most cases of hypothyroidism are caused by the dog’s own immune system attacking its own thyroid gland tissue. This condition is called autoimmune thyroiditis. This type of hypothyroidism is further broken down into two types, lymphocytic thyroiditis and idiopathic thyroid atrophy. In both cases, the gland fails to produce enough of the hormone, thyroxine.

Common hypothyroidism symptoms were: Lethargic behavior such as a lack of interest in play, frequent napping, tiring out on long walks. Weight gain, sometimes without an apparent gain in appetite. Bacterial infections of the skin and dry skin. Hair loss, especially on the trunk or tail (“rat’s tail”). Discoloration or thickening of the skin where hair loss has occurred. Cold intolerance/seeking out warm places to lie down. Slow heart rate and chronic ear infections. Severe behavioral changes such as unprovoked aggression, head tilt, seizures, anxiety and/or compulsivity, and depression. Not all cases of hypothyroidism are due to autoimmune lymphocytic infiltration of the gland.  There can be other “inducers” of the disease such as consumption of too much Iodine. These inducers can be very difficult to identify.

Hypothyroidism is easy to diagnose with a blood test that checks the level of various thyroid hormones including T3 and T4. Most hypothyroid dogs respond readily to treatment with synthetic thyroid medication such as Soloxine. Many dogs suffer from a low thyroid hormone level for years without treatment. L-thyroxine (T4) tablets are generally administered twice a day.  When given twice a day, some veterinarians prescribe 0.1 mg/10 pounds twice per day as the initial dosage but each case is considered individually.  Repeat exams and occasional follow-up blood testing really helps to fine tune the proper amount of medication needed for each patient. Fortunately, thyroid hormone is available in inexpensive tablet form. I generally prescribe the T-4 form of the hormone, l-thyroxine (levothyroxine sodium). All dogs need their dose individually tailored to their needs. Signs that the initial dose may be too high are agitation, excessive thirst, and diarrhea. When these occur the dose needs to be lowered. Once a dog is placed on medication, it should be given for the rest of the pet’s life. Each veterinarian will have their own opinion as to dose and treatment plan, based on what has worked best for them in the past.

Hyperthyroidism in the Form of Graves’ Disease – Understanding Graves’ Disease
| July 27, 2010 | 6:33 pm | Thyroid Booster | No comments

Hyperthyroidism in the Form of Graves’ Disease – Understanding Graves’ Disease

What is Graves’ Disease? One of the most common disorders involving the thyroid is Graves’ disease. Since it was first described by the Irish physician Robert James Graves, it has become the leading cause of hyperthyroidism in the world.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease caused by antibodies that mimic the effects of the hormone thyroid-stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland. These antibodies cause the thyroid gland to produce more and more thyroid hormone beyond the normal limits. This causes the body’s metabolism to speed up, resulting in the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Exactly how and why these antibodies are produced by the body, there is yet little explanation. However, it has been observed that Graves’ disease tends to run in the family so there might be a genetic predisposition to the production of the autoantibodies.

Another theory states that the production of the antibodies could be the result of a bacterial or viral infection as Graves’ disease tends to manifest later in life. One such organism believed to be involved in the development of Graves’ disease is the bacterium Yersinia enterocolitica. There is indirect evidence that there is a structural similarity between the bacterium and the human thyrotropin receptor, making the antibodies produced against Yersinia enterocolitica react with the thyroid gland. There is very little evidence to support this theory and it has been believed that the bacterium is not a direct cause of Graves’ disease but that it only serves to aid in the development of the disease in genetically susceptible individuals.

Spotting Graves’ Disease

Graves’ disease sports all the common signs and symptoms of a hyperthyroid patient but one such stands out against the rest to differentiate Graves’ disease from the rest — exophthalmos.

Exophthalmos is the protrusion of one or both of the eyeballs in most patients afflicted with Graves’ disease. This is due to the edematous swelling of the tissues at the back of the eyeballs and degenerative changes in the extraocular muscles. Immunoglobulins that may react with the eye muscles can be found in the blood of many of these patients. There is also reason to believe that exophthalmos in itself is an autoimmune process as the concentration of these immunoglobulins are highest in patients with increased levels of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins.

Patients with exophthalmos may suffer from impaired vision as the protrusion of the eyeball stretches the optical nerve. There may also be the risk of developing corneal irritation and infections because the eyes cannot fully close when the patient sleeps or blinks, causing the drying of the eyes.

Doctors who suspect Graves’ disease in patients may request thyroid blood tests to measure the levels of thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone in the blood. Patients afflicted with Graves’ disease mostly have high levels of thyroid hormone and low levels of TSH. This is because the pituitary gland stops its secretion of TSH when the body’s levels of thyroid hormone go beyond normal limits.

Treatment of Graves’ Disease

Patients with Graves’ disease are usually treated with antithyroid drugs like propylthiouracil, methimazole, and carbimazole. Patients may also be treated with radioactive iodine to destroy the hypersecreting thyroid cells. In some cases, surgery may be necessitated although proper preparations may be made as surgical removal of the thyroid gland in hyperthyroid patients is dangerous.

Graves’ disease patients who must undergo surgical removal of the thyroid gland must first undergo several months of treatment with propylthiouracil until they reach normal basal metabolic rates, followed by large doses of iodine one to two weeks immediately before the operation to decrease the swelling and diminish the blood supply of the thyroid. Prior to the development of these preoperative procedures, mortality rate in thyroidectomy patients was rather high but now, it has been reduced to as low as 1 in every 1000 operations.

Ask Dr. Mona: I got to diagnosed with a hyper thyroid. The doc said it is auto immune disease. Which causes which? I am only 33 this year, am I too young to get it? The joints on my hands (and I suspect knees too) are painful and swollen. My GP said he will not prescribe any medicine for my pain as I will be seeing the thyroid specialist next week so that the specialist will assess my condition better. Will the auto immune disease (the doc said mine is graves disease) lead to another fa[more]tal sickness? I am so worried tat my life is not long. How long will the patient with auto immune disease survived? Please advise. Thanking u in advance. [less] Check out this video for Dr. Mona’s response! What Is Hashimoto’s Disease?

What Is Hashimoto’s Disease?

Hashimoto’s disease (by Japanese surgeon; Hashimoto, Hakaru 1881-1934) is a chronic thyroiditis. It is characterized by the production of autoantibodies that attack the thyroid. This will eventually cause a lack of thyroid hormone, thyroid fibrosis, and infiltration of thyroid tissue by lymphoid tissue.
Hashimoto’s disease is also a common cause of a goiter. A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. It becomes clearly visible as a swelling on the front part of the neck because the thyroids tends to grow 2 to 5 times bigger than normal.
Hashimoto’s disease is also called Hashimoto’s struma, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, or struma lymphomatosa.

The thyroid gland secretes two hormones controlling the usage of energy and the body temperature. To determine if the thyroid gland is working properly, different hormone levels can be measured in the blood. The pituitary gland secretes a hormone called TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). TSH level is clearly elevated when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly. Also an iodine absorption test may be performed to show too low uptake of iodine, which may indicate hypothyroidism.

If you suspect that your thyroid is not active enough, you can do a thyroid self-test in the morning. Stay in bed after you awake and take your temperature from under your arm. Try to stay very still and quiet for fifteen minutes. If your temperature is 97.6F or lower for 5 days, you can ask your professional health care provider if there is a reason to test the condition of your thyroid.

Symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease include fatigue, loss of appetite, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, muscle cramps, depression, fertility problems, painful premenstrual periods, muscle weakness, dry and scaly skin, yellowish coloration in the skin, yellowish bumps on the eyelids, hair loss, constipation, persistent infections, swollen eyes, and milky discharge from breasts.

Hashimoto’s disease is a rare disease and it is more common among women than men. Usually it appears in the age range of 30-50. About 10-30% of people suffering from Hashimoto’s disease will develop hypothyroidism. The treatment is usually replacement of the thyroid hormone for the rest of the patient’s life. In case autoimmune diseases run in your family it doesn’t mean that you will definitely be ill.

www.karenrothnutrition.com Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Karen Roth, MS, NC discusses sugar content of common yogurts. Yogurt can make a very good snack and even breakfast. Most think of yogurt as a dairy product and supportive of bone health, but there is so much more. The live cultures in yogurt fortify your immune system. The mineral Zinc which fights free radicals, while the iodine support the thyroid. When looking for yogurts, make sure it says Live or Living yogurt cultures on the label. And really read the labels. Most of the popular brands have as much as 30 or more grams of sugar and thats about 7 teaspoons in one serving. Many of the most advertised brands claiming that they help to naturally regulate your digestive system, contains high fructose syrup, sugar as its 2nd and 3rd ingredient. Other low sugar or sugar free brands will have the harmful artificial sweeteners aspartame or sucralose, which are 200 600 times sweeter than regular sugar. Because they are 200 300 times sweeter than sugar which stimulates our taste buds creating a need for more sweets. I would like to recommend you choose a healthier yogurt and give you some suggestions on how you can dress it up. Plain Greek yogurt is quit yummy. It is not sweet at all and tastes like sour cream. So it makes a delicious topping for baked potatoes and boy what a potassium packed dish that would be. Use it in place of milk or water with smoothies; use it as a dip for celery, carrots and even strawberries

Thyroid Disease And Menopause

Thyroid Disease And Menopause

There is a connection between thyroid disease and menopause. It has been seen in most women and research also suggests that the thyroid gland stops to function properly when the menopausal symptoms start to manifest. If hypothyroidism is detected in a woman who is aged between 30 and 40, it is an indication that she is in her premenopausal stage. This stage interferes with the balance of estrogen and progesterone levels and this leads to further imbalances in other hormones. One of the consequences of these hormone imbalances is the development of a thyroid malfunction or disorder.

There is also a similarity in the symptoms of these two conditions. Some of the similar symptoms include poor memory, exhaustion, depression as well as mood swings. Other similar symptoms include sleep problems, increased anxiety level and hair loss.

This similarity in symptoms makes it difficult to distinguish between the two conditions. It may also be difficult to diagnose on whether a person is suffering from a thyroid disease or menopause.

If you are experiencing conditions such as hair loss especially loss of hair from the eyebrows and the eyelashes, pain in the neck region as well as swelling in the hands and legs, it is likely that you may be suffering from a thyroid disorder. On the other hand, menopausal symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats and dryness in the vaginal tract. A thyroid disorder may go undetected in some women especially those aged over 40 because the symptoms may be similar to menopausal symptoms.

Underactive Thyroid Disease Can Be Reversed By Dieting

Underactive Thyroid Disease Can Be Reversed By Dieting

I bet you didn’t know that underactive thyroid disease (hypothyroid) in most cases is reversible? It’s true, and the best of all is you don’t actually have to take any drugs to reverse the problem.

It is always advisable to consult your doctor before you try any alternative remedies and most of them will be open to natural methods before prescribing any drugs. If they are simply not open to these alternatives I would consider changing your doctor!

There are some common symptoms that come with hypothyroid. Some of the most common are depression, extreme weight gain, fatigue, short term memory loss, body aches and pains and skin problems (including dryness and itchiness).

A natural solution to your thyroid problem simply is your diet. Everything you need is in the local grocery or supermarket…right on your doorstep!

Just like any diet plan there are foods that will help your situation, and foods to avoid that will just make things worse. The foods you need to be eating should be high in vitamins and minerals and those that provide you with a lot of energy. This will increase your metabolism, the reverse of underactive thyroid disease, and naturally burn fat and lose weight.

You need to remember that weight loss, no matter who you are or what your situation, requires dedication. You need to stick to your chosen diet plan and exercise regular.

So what are the main types of food you should be eating? Lets take a look at 4 of the main food types:

Coconut foods and oils
Seaweed and herbs
Fruits and Vegetables
Healthy fat, such as butter, flax seeds and salmon.

One of the most important things to remember is not to reduce your carbohydrates intake by too much. Even for people without hypothyroid reducing your carbs to a silly degree, like some diet plans do, is just not healthy. For you this will create the completely opposite effect and reduce your thyroid hormone production even more than it already is. Basically this means your metabolism is going to slow down even more and you will gain weight!

Your body is very capable of healing itself if you give it a fighting chance. If your following a good diet, of the right foods and nutrition, and getting regular exercise you will naturally find the problem fixing itself.

Can you imagine how you will feel a few days from starting on your new diet? You will feel much better in yourself, you will probably sleep better and be a lot more restful. Surely you will no longer feel depressed when you see results. This is possible when you have the right information.

The main hurdle you face to begin with is selecting the right diet plan. There are so many options available online it’s hard to chose. You need to be sure your spending your hard earned money on something that is going to work.

If you wish to try some diet pills to accompany your diet I suggest only sticking to proven, pure and natural weight loss pills. One of the purest and most popular pills are based on Hoodia Gordonii. I have reviewed this kind of diet supplement here: Are Hoodia Weight Loss Pills Effective For Appetite Suppression?

Herbal diet pills work very well along side a healthy and nutritious diet plan. I found a great web page that describes in detail the best way to diet when you have underactive thyroid disease. You can read more here: http://www.The-Natural-Thyroid-Diet.com

Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease is an inflammatory condition which affects the eye muscles. It is almost always associated with hypothyroidism or thyroid cancer. The condition is an inflammation of soft eye tissue, eyelid retraction, proptosis which is forward projection or displacement of the eyeball, exposure of the cornea and compression of the optic nerve. There are certain visual signs of the disease such as eyelid retraction and eyelid lag, bulging eyes, double vision and protruded eyes. In many cases there is facial disfigurement and blindness.

Corneal Disorders

The cornea is that “clear window” located at the front of the eye and is extremely important for clear vision. Over – exposure of the cornea results in drying, causes eye irritation, photophobia (or excessive sensitivity to light), tearing, pain and even decreased vision.

The severity of corneal exposure would depend on a few factors: poor eyelid closure, eyelid retraction and proptosis. In the worst cases such as when someone gets an eye ulcer, surgery or radiotherapy may be the only option to prevent further damage to the eye.

What is Ophthalmoplegia?

This is a condition in where eye muscles become thickened and scarred, preventing eyes from moving freely or together. It is a type of eye paralysis and can even result in having “crossed eyes”, double vision or blurred vision. In most cases, ophthalmoplegia does not require treatment. Glasses with prisms may reduce and even eliminate the double vision in cases where the condition is not as severe.

About a million people in Unites States and Canada suffer from thyroid eye disease. Many patients with thyroid eye have to contend with facial disfigurement caused by it. It can lead to great depression loss of employment and relationships. Many of these individuals live in solitude avoiding social contacts because of the response to the disfigurement.

There have been major advances in surgical treatments of thyroid eye disease. However, very little has been done to heal the psychological scars. Some remedies include flax seed oil, room humidifiers, specified eye drops and lubricating ointments. A cold compress on the eyes as well as elevating the head to relieve any swelling also helps. Other remedies include corrective surgery for eyelids, decompression eye surgery and wearing high quality sunglasses. Using steroids and prisms that assist in correcting double vision are also helpful.

There are a lot of reports showing that many of the above can help alleviate symptoms associated with thyroid eye disease. Eye exercises are always good to do even if you’re not a thyroid eye disease sufferer. This can serve as a preventative measure. More must be done do address the psychological consequences of the disease but the above information have proven to be quite useful for thyroid eye disease sufferers.

Hair loss and Thyroid disease: How to Prevent Hair Loss in Thyroid Sufferers

Before talking about hair loss and thyroid disease, I should note this fact: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 50% of all adults in the U.S. experience hair thinning by age 40. But thyroid sufferers should thoroughly care about their hair to avoid experiencing hair loss earlier and more quickly than usual. So in this article, you will find out important facts about hair thinning and thyroid, as well as hair loss and thyroid disease.

Hair Thinning and Thyroid

When our body experience hormonal imbalance, hair loss may happen. When the hormone testosterone on the scalp starts to turn into its less useful version – dihydrotestosterone (DHT), DHT attacks our hair follicles and shrinks them, or sometimes even make them disappear. As a result, our hair becomes thinner and finer day by day, and then begins to fall out. I do not even mention the fact that hair stops growing.

This conversion of testosterone to DHT occurs more speedily in thyroid patients with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. The worst thing is that they may have long-lasting hair falling due to this disease.

Some thyroid sufferers actually complain that speedy hair loss is the worst symptom of their disease. Here are common symptoms of hair thinning and hair loss they observe during thyroid:

Thinning hair, Large amounts of hair falling out in the sink or shower, Their hair becomes dry, coarse and brittle.

Here are 2 important steps to stop or prevent hair loss in thyroid sufferers:

Go to an endocrinologist and determine if you have hypo- or hyperthyroid. Then start following a healthy diet rich in all necessary vitamins and minerals.
