Learn how hypothyroidism can cause weight gain and how you might prevent it.


I have been working with a client recently who is in great physical condition but about 30 pounds heavier than she would like. And though she works out like a trooper and her diet is calorie controlled and healthy, she has been unable to drop much below her current weight, even after working with me for a few months.


This was frustrating to both of us until she learned from her doctor that she has an underactive thyroid gland or what is called ‘hypothyroidism’.


This revelation led me to do some research on the thyroid gland and the hormones that it produces. I wish to share my findings with you in the hope that you will learn what to do to maintain a healthy thyroid.


I found out that thyroid problems are more common than diabetes and heart disease and that 1 in 20 Canadians suffer from thyroid dysfunction, and that women are 10 times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.


Apparently, taking care of thyroid health may be as simple as ensuring adequate iodine in your diet.


The thyroid gland is a tiny , butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the windpipe. This small gland looks after most of your bodys organs including the heart, brain and liver.


The gland uses tiny amounts of iodine to produce two types of hormones, which regulate cell growth and metabolism. Thyroid hormone keeps the rest of the body working at the right speed.


Although the trace mineral iodine is only needed in small amounts by the body, it is an essential nutrient, critical for thyroid health and proper physical and mental development.


Without adequate iodine, the production of thyroid hormones is slowed. An underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, sensitivity to cold, memory loss, weight gain, loss of hair, high blood pressure and dry itchy skin. It can also lead to much more serious health problems if untreated.


Fatigue and weight gain are the two most common symptoms of the problem.


Many people aren’t getting enough iodine in there diet and in fact, iodine deficiency is a world wide health concern and the leading cause of thyroid problems.


In North America iodine is added to table salt to help alleviate the problem, but anyone on a low sodium diet or opting to use sea salt or alternatives becomes at risk for an iodine deficiency.


For the protection of the thyroid gland the average person requires 160 micrograms of iodine per day.


If you don’t get it from table salt, iodine can be found primarily in kelp and other sea vegetables, sea food, milk, eggs and whole grain breads. Kelp is by far the richest source and is richer than other sea vegetables such as dulse or spirulina.


Primarily because of the iodine content, kelp is reputed to boost thyroid function, stimulate weight loss and be beneficial for brain tissue, sensory nerves, spinal cord and blood vessels. Kelp is also rich in B-Vitamins (important for heart health and combating stress), and vitamin K, which helps maintain healthy blood clotting.


I am hoping that the addition of iodine to my client’s diet may help her to shed some weight and perhaps it could help you to avoid this health risk.

Thyroid weight gain is basically the effect of the thyroid gland not working properly. It is through this gland that the thyroid hormone is being produced. This hormone acts as the body’s counterpart to a car’s cruise control. It is the cruise control that allows the car to maintain a constant speed. And just like a car, it is the thyroid gland that keeps the rest of the body working at constant speed.


Normal levels of the thyroid hormone make it possible for the various functions of the body to maintain its normal activity. A decrease in the production of the thyroid hormone and the body’s level of activity also decreases. Cells in the body seem to work slower. In so doing, the cells need less energy. But when the amount of energy provided in the body remains at the same level, some of this excess energy is being stored by the body for future use. The body does this by turning the excess energy in calories into fat. This in turn becomes additional weight in the body.


When the thyroid gland produces less of the thyroid hormone, many other things happen to the body. With the cells using lesser energy due to decreased activity, less heat is produced. With less heat, the sweat glands no longer need to keep the skin moist as the body also becomes colder. In this situation, the brain also goes through decreased activity which makes it want to sleep all the time. The same goes with the heart as less activity also allows it to beat slower. With decreased hormone levels in the thyroid gland, everything just slows up.


The opposite is true when the thyroid gland begins to produce the right amount of hormones that the body needs. When the levels of the thyroid hormones increase, the cells in the body also undergo an increase in activity. As a result of this, the body requires more energy and so makes use of the fat and protein stores and convert them to energy. As fat and protein cell stores decrease when being used, the body undergoes weight changes.


But an overactive thyroid gland also is not good. Aside from the above effects, an overactive thyroid also enables the body to produce more heat as a by-product of the increased activity. The body then begins to sweat in an effort to cool things down. The brain then begins to work overtime which can result in irritability and often difficulty in sleeping. The heart also begins to beat faster as everything in the body tries to speed up in activity.


In the body, it is the pituitary gland that sets the level of activity in the thyroid gland. Located at the base of the brain right between the temples, the pituitary gland sets the level in which the thyroid gland functions and, in so doing, regulates how much of the thyroid hormone is released into the blood stream.


If there the pituitary gland detects decreased levels of the thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, it sends out more of the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH into the thyroid gland by way of the bloodstream to stimulate it to produce more thyroid hormone. Thyroid weight gain happens if the body has an under active thyroid.


A decrease in thyroid function leads to less energy consumption in the body. This makes the body to store up excess calories in the body as fat which results in weight gain.

Overseeing the functioning of the thyroid gland is the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. It is ultimately responsible for telling the thyroid how much thyroid hormone to release into the body. When the thyroid hormone levels in the body decrease then the pituitary gland releases Thyroid Stimulating Hormones (TSH) that then signal to the thyroid that it’s time to produce more thyroid hormones. And if there is an excess amount of thyroid hormone in the body then the pituitary gland stops releasing TSH into the blood stream and as a result the thyroid secretes less thyroid hormone into the body.

When the body is functioning properly, there is a balance between TSH and thyroid hormone levels in the body, and our bodies are working at optimal levels. However, too much or too little TSH and thyroid hormones can signal a variety of symptoms, one of which is weight gain.

An over active thyroid, or hyperthyroidism can result in symptoms such as trembling, insomnia, breathlessness, fatigue and more. It is often compared to having had too much coffee. An under active thyroid or hypothyroidism however, has been blamed for such debilitating symptoms as: fatigue, muscle cramps, depression, irritability and weight gain, among others.

Weight gain is perhaps the most common symptom of an under active thyroid. While there are many reasons why your thyroid isn’t producing the levels of hormone that is required by the body, the results are often the same. This hormone which regulates the body’s metabolism is not producing enough hormone and as a result the body’s cells require less energy, therefore more energy is stored as sugar and fat in the body. Even though people with hypothyroidism often consume less calories than other people, the body is functioning so sluggishly that very few of those calories are being burned as fuel.

While weight gain has been clearly identified as a significant symptom of an under active thyroid, this problem is only exacerbated by additional symptoms such as fatigue, muscle cramps and weakness. How is one to increase their activity level if there are other physical reasons preventing them from doing so?

Once your thyroid has been diagnosed as hypothyroidism, your Doctor will likely start you on a thyroid hormone regime and will closely monitor your progress. Dosage will be strictly monitored because too much hormone can be as adverse as too little. Once you begin hormone therapy however, the body will begin to balance out and your metabolism should start to function properly again. As always though, check with your Doctor prior to starting any weight loss program, but weight loss is generally easier once the thyroid levels have been stabilized.
