In this video clip, Joan Mathews Larson, PhD notes when she started giving patients an iodine/iodide supplement, patients lost weight, had reductions in appetite, and woke up with a bang with more energy. “They couldn’t be happier,” she notes. She also found that in a lot of these patients, blood tests showed their thyroid levels to be normal, however, based on the results they got by taking iodine/iodide, it’s obvious that these patients needed thyroid / iodine. This was noted by Joan Mathews Larson, PhD in a speech she gave in September 2007. For 30years, Joan Mathews Larson, PhD has been treating addiction, anxiety and depression with natural supplements in order to correct the underlying biochemical problems which cause these conditions. Dr. Larson is the author of “7 Weeks to Sobriety”, “Depression Free”, and “7 Weeks to Emotional Healing”.

Iodine For Hypothyroidism
Iodine is important for the production of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). It is in most foods that we eat such as diary products, fish and including iodized table salt. When there is an insuffienct amount of this important mineral in our blood stream it can cause hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the number one cause of primary hypothyroidism and goiter on a worldwide basis, but this is one cause of the disease that is a hundred percent treatable.
Studies have shown that in countries like Japan, it is extremely rare to see hypothyroidism. They theorize that because their diets consist of iodine rich foods like seaweed and sea salt and that they are receiving enough of this mineral in their systems to prevent this disease. With people being more health conscience, they are limiting certain foods and salt intake. Research has indicated that by doing this, it is leaving them vulnerable to a under active thyroid.
There are other causes of an inactive thyroid so taking iodine is not always the answer. It is crucial that you consult your physician on everything you take, including supplements that contain this mineral. Only your doctor can advise on whether you should increase your iodine intake. When he or she prescribes this mineral to you, you will be monitored very closely through TSH and other blood tests. Good sources of iodine is kelp, seafood, eggs, and diary products.
Although iodine for hypothyroidism is a common form of treatment along with synthroid and other thyroid medications, it is not recommended that you do not use excessive amounts of iodized salt on your food. Although the iodized salt is a combatant to hypothyroidism, the salt itself may have adverse effects on your body.
As with anything, caution should be taken when adding this supplement to your diet because to much iodine can lead to Graves Disease. The main point is, when used under a doctor’s advice, iodine for hypothyroidism can assist you in leading a normal life.

Iodine Deficiency Can Cause Cretinism – Prevent Cretinism From Happening to Your Child
Cretinism, for those who might not be truly aware of it, manifests itself insidiously in a child. Some parents might not notice the signs readily in their children. However, if detected and treated promptly, you can stop cretinism in its tracks and give your child a better chance at a happier life.
What is Cretinism?
Cretinism is a condition caused by extreme hypothyroidism during fetal life, infancy, and childhood. The characteristics of cretinism include stunted body growth and mental retardation. Hypothyroidism in the most critical stages of development is highly devastating for the central nervous system. Severe hypothyroidism in a fetus or an infant could lead to mental retardation, one of the most debilitating effects of cretinism. However, early recognition of the signs of hypothyroidism could prevent the more permanent characteristics of cretinism.
What Causes Cretinism?
Cretinism can result from a congenital lack of a thyroid gland. This condition is also known as congenital cretinism. It may also result from the inability of the thyroid gland to produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormones that are crucial to the development of a child due to a genetic defect of the thyroid itself.
The most preventable cause of cretinism is a lack of iodine in the diet. This type of cretinism is called endemic cretinism. Unlike congenital cretinism, the severity of endemic cretinism varies according to the amount of iodine in the diet. In some places where the soil is iodine-deficient and sources of iodine are scarce, whole populaces have been observed to have cretinism tendencies.
Iodine, Thyroid Function, and Cretinism
The mechanisms for the effect of thyroid hormones on the development of humans are still not largely explained. However, it has been observed that a severe deficiency of thyroid hormone in the fetal and infant developmental stages is largely devastating to the central nervous system development of the child.
Iodine is a trace mineral that is required for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. Small amounts of iodine circulating in the bloodstream are trapped by the thyroid gland to produce the two hormones that govern most of the metabolic rates of the entire body.
With a deficiency in either iodine or thyroid hormone, the child suffers from hypothyroidism and in extreme cases, cretinism. Mental and skeletal growth are much slower in comparison to soft tissue growth. If the child or infant is not diagnosed within a few weeks, mental retardation becomes permanent.
Detecting Hypothyroidism in Children
Newborns may still present as normal due to the presence of maternal thyroid hormones in their bodies. However, a few weeks after birth, the baby’s movements may be sluggish and both physical and mental growth start to become retarded. The baby may also sleep for longer periods of time and the cry is weaker than most. Some parents may think that such quiet behavior in their infants mean that they have a well-behaved baby. It is always best to be cautious and see a doctor immediately.
Infants identified to be hypothyroid may be treated with either iodine if they suffer from the earlier stages of endemic cretinism or thyroxine if their thyroid gland is damaged, absent or unable to produce the required amounts of thyroid hormone. Treatment at any time usually causes return of normal physical growth but after several weeks, mental retardation may already be permanent despite treatment.
Endemic cretinism can be avoided if the mother eats foods with sufficient amounts of iodine. In some developed countries, endemic cretinism has been eliminated by correcting the iodine deficiency of expecting mothers as well as their children. However, several cases of hypothyroidism still appear every now and then. It is for this reason that many countries now screen newborns for hypothyroidism to recognize the full syndrome before it is too late.

Iodine For Thyroid Treatment ? Myth Busted?
Straight out of the gate, let me say that iodine is essential for your thyroid to function properly. In fact, many of us (if not most of us) are deficient in iodine and should consider an iodine supplement for thyroid treatment. I’ll get into that in a minute.
The need for iodine is not what I’m challenging in this article. I’m also not challenging the use of iodine specifically as a thyroid treatment. I’m challenging a popular test used to determine if you are iodine deficient.
The Iodine Test
A popular test for iodine sufficiency involves painting some iodine on your abdomen and then observing how long it takes for the orange/yellow stain to disappear. The theory is that if it disappears quickly, you are iodine deficient. If it remains for 24 hours, you are iodine sufficient.
I’ve read about this test many times over the years and I’ve done the test about a half-dozen times over the past couple of years. The test always shows that I’m iodine deficient as the stain disappears in just a few hours.
I’ve never been surprised at the outcome because I know that I’m borderline hypo-thyroid. In other words, when my doctor has tested my thyroid function in the past, I’m consistently at the low end of the normal range.
However, I’m naturally suspicious until I see proof. I wanted proof that this test was really giving me the true status of my iodine levels. I guess I should have been born in Missouri – the “Show Me” state.
Show Me The Proof
I know that having sufficient iodine is important to my health so I decided to do an experiment to see if the “paint your belly with iodine” test was valid.
I have some 130 mg potassium iodide tablets and I used them to saturate my thyroid with iodine. I took one tablet daily for two weeks to makeup any iodine deficiency that I might have. After 2 weeks, I felt certain that my thyroid was saturated with iodine.
I then performed the “paint your belly” test 2 days in a row while still taking the 130 mg tablets. What happened? The stain disappeared in just a few hours. Myth Busted!
That pretty much proved to me that the “paint your belly” test was an urban legend and was not an accurate indicator of anyone’s iodine status or the need for thyroid treatment with iodine.
More Research Needed
The results of my not-so-scientific experiment made me even more curious so I did a lot more iodine treatment research.
I found that idea of iodine being toxic at moderate to high levels is likely not true. The idea that iodine can be toxic came for an experiment on rabbits and guinea pigs performed in the 1940′s.
The results were mistakenly applied to humans who metabolize iodine differently. More modern research shows that our kidneys efficiently remove any excess iodine in our bodies in just a few hours with zero toxicity from iodine treatment. Also, our grandparents took large doses of iodine as medication for multiple illnesses and they suffered no ill-effects.
I also learned that in the past few decades, the amount of iodine in our diet had been drastically reduced. Iodine has been added to salt for a long time to insure that the population received enough to prevent goiters. However, since low sodium diets are being recommended by doctors to reduce heart disease, many people have reduced their salt intake. The results are that many of us do not get enough iodine.
Also, there is a lot of competition for access to our thyroid glands. Chlorine in our tap water, fluoride in our toothpaste, plus the bromide in commercially baked breads all compete with iodine in the thyroid. If we are getting a lot of chlorine, fluoride, and bromide, we are probably not efficiently absorbing the iodine that we receive.
My conclusion is that I need to be receiving supplemental iodine in my diet. I can’t make any recommendations for you since the official party line is that excess iodine is toxic. So, do a little reading and decide for yourself what is best for you.
The Last Thing I Learned
The one last thing that I learned in my research is that an iodine deficiency can take a couple of months to correct. Therefore, even thought I believe that the “paint your belly” iodine test is not valid, I’m going to reserve my final judgment for a while.
For now, I think it’s an urban myth. But, after I continue taking daily iodine supplements for several months, I’ll repeat the test and report my results.
Stop by at Unconventional Health.com/Iodine-For-Thyroid-Treatment every once in a while and see how my little experiment turns out. Or, if you like, just subscribe to my RSS feed and receive an update whenever I post something new.
Best wishes for living life without an orange belly and keeping enough iodine in your thyroid – Cheers!
PS – Iodine does a lot more for your body than just make your thyroid work right. Every cell in your body has iodine receptors. God did not put them there just for fun. But, that’s a topic for another time.

Iodine is necessary to make thyroid hormone and protects against breast cancer as noted in this video clip of Joan Mathews Larson, PhD. Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @fatnews.com. T3 thyroid hormone contains 3 atoms of iodine. T4 thyroid hormone contains for 4 atoms of iodine. T4, which is sometimes called the storage form of thyroid hormone, is converted into T3, the more active form, when an enzyme removes one of the atoms of iodine converting T4 into T3. Enzymes are like chemical scissors. Dr. Larson notes that iodine protects against breast cancer by converting dangerous estrogens (estrone and estadial) into a safe estrogen (estrial). If you look at the bottom of the first slide, she notes that cancer-causing estrogens can’t be converted into safe estrogen without iodine and vitamin B6. The slide also notes that alcohol destroys both iodine and vitamin B6, which increases the risk of breast cancer. Quoting from a book by David Brownstein, MD called “Iodine, why you need it, why you can’t live without it”, she notes that breast cancer occurs in 1 out of every 7 women, whereas it used to occur in only 1 out of every 20 women. This occurred after 1975 when the bromide replaced iodine as an additive in breads and pastries. She notes that anyone taking a thyroid supplement should also take iodine/iodide. She notes this will also allow you to reduce your dose of thyroid. This was noted by Joan Mathews Larson, PhD in a speech she gave in September 2007. For 30years, Joan Mathews …

Fate of Iodine in Thyroid Hormone Formation – Why Iodine is Necessary For Thyroid Hormone Formation
To form sufficient quantities of the thyroid hormone thyroxine or T4, about 50 milligrams of iodine in the form of iodides in the diet is required every year. This just shows how important iodine is in the process of thyroid hormone formation and consequently, the regulation of the body’s metabolism.
Iodides in the Diet
The iodides available in your food are absorbed in the gastrointestinal in much the same way as chlorides. These are then normally rid of by the kidneys through the urine but not before the thyroid gland gets its share of iodides. This share constitutes about a fifth of the whole amount of ingested iodide.
Iodide Trapping
The first step in thyroid hormone formation is the acquisition of iodide by the thyroid gland by a mechanism known as iodide trapping. The basal membrane of the thyroid cell is specifically designed to pump iodides actively into the cell. In a normal gland, the pump has the ability to concentrate the iodide to 30 times the concentration of iodides in the blood and in a hyperactive gland, this shoots up to about 250 times more. The iodide pump is regulated by several factors but mainly by the concentration of thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH.
TSH is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland to regulate thyroid gland activity. Aside from increasing the rate of iodide trapping by the pumps, it also stimulates the thyroid gland to produce and secrete more thyroid hormone. When concentrations of thyroid hormone reach desirable levels and normal metabolic rates are achieved, the TSH levels go down until such time the pituitary gland receives a signal to secrete more hormone.
Thyroglobulin, Thyroxine, and Triiodothyronine
The thyroid cells are protein-secreting cells and one of their major products is thyroglobulin. Thyroglobulin is a large glycoprotein molecule with a molecular weight of around 335,000. Each molecule of thyroglobulin contains around 70 amino acids called tyrosine, the major substrate that combines with iodine to form the thyroid hormones. Basically, the thyroid hormones are formed inside the thyroglobulin.
The first essential step in the formation of thyroid hormone is the oxidation of iodide ions to nascent iodine capable of combining with tyrosine. This process is promoted by the enzyme peroxidase and its accompanying hydrogen peroxide.
The next step is the organification of iodine or the binding of iodine with the thyroglobulin molecule. Even in its oxidized form, iodine binds quite slowly to tyrosine. In the thyroid cell, however, iodine is associated with aniodinase enzyme which speeds up the organification to a matter of seconds or minutes.
Tyrosine is first iodized to monoiodotyrosine and then to diiodotyrosine. The iodotyrosine formed then couple with one another to form thyroid hormones. A coupling between monoiodotyrosine and diiodotyrosine yieldstriiodothyronine and a coupling between two molecules of diiodotyrosine will form thyroxine, which is the major hormonal product of the thyroid gland.
The intricate process of thyroid hormone formation is also unique among endocrine systems in that the thyroid gland stores its hormones in follicles until such time when TSH stimulation causes the thyroid gland to release the hormones and speed up the iodide trapping process. And the cycle starts all over again.

Loose Weight by Consuming Thyroid Friendly Iodine
Hypothyroidism causes as a main symptom the uncontrollable weight gain, accompanied by fatigue, loss of the libido, forgetfulness, impotence, irritability and unhealthy looking nails, hair and teeth. In case you really suffer from hypothyroidism, the only thing that may help you is the mineral iodine to stimulate your under active thyroid.
The thyroid gland produces in case of slowed down function weight gain and accumulation of fats, as it has a major role in the energetic metabolism. An under active thyroid gland also leads to cellulite, accumulation of water in the body in spite of the huge quantity of calories lost; you will feel sluggish and powerless.
Although surgical extirpation of the thyroid gland might seem helpful, doctors now know the important role of the gland in the metabolism. You will gain weight because of hypothyroidism but the symptoms will not be drastic if the gland hasn’t been removed.
The mineral Substance called Iodine is present in a very small amount in our body but its role in the function of the thyroid gland is tremendous. In its absence we would immediately gain weight and hypothyroidism will occur. Nowadays, the insufficient quantity of Iodine assimilated by our bodies, caused by the fact that we tend to eat Iodine-less food, begins to take us to the apparition of a type of very spread hypothyroidism. By increasing the daily intake of Iodine the function of your slowing down thyroid will immediately go back to normal.
The increase of the intake of Iodine can be acknowledged by different food supplements. But these must also be taken carefully as a higher level of Iodine in your body is damaging as well. We tend to ingest high quantities of Iodine contained in fertilizers and table salt.
Doctors recommend the usage of natural supplements like kelp instead of drugs. Kelp has a moderating effect on the thyroid gland causing fat people to loose weight and thin persons to gain weight. While taking Iodine supplements you must verify the level of vitamin A you consume daily as it is crucial for the absorption of Iodine in the thyroid. The gland contains a hormone called Thyroxin that facilitates the absorption of Iodine into the glandular tissues. Thyroxin can only be secreted by the thyroid in presence of vitamin A.
If you have really tried to exercise more and keep a healthy diet and no real benefits in weight loss appear, you must ask a doctor as you may have problems with you thyroid. But in case you just want to loose weight you should know Iodine will only help you if your thyroid gland is malfunctioning.
